Then there are the aforementioned inconsistencies in the narratives, which were apparently of no concern to the author, such as the order of the creation of plants, animals, and man, and the curiosity that is Cain’s wife. Why was the author so insouciant about these difficulties? Plausibly because he did not intend his stories to be read literalistically. Together all these features of the narratives of Adam and Eve make it plausible that they are not to be taken literally. The author has given us a story of mankind’s origin and rebellion against God that embodies important truths expressed in highly figurative language.
