CHAPTER THIRTEEN

The tap tap tapping that echoed through Lydia's room should have been the sound of progress as her article for the Capitol wrote itself. But it wasn't her fingers gliding furiously over the keyboard of her MacBook Air as the inside scoop about the rodeo poured out of her. Instead, it was the sound of her foot tapping against the wood floor as she looked over the top of her laptop and out the window.

Wick had left forever ago. Lydia missed him as though he'd been gone a year. Even though she'd only known him for less than a day.

In truth, it had only been two hours since Wick had left. Two hours, thirty-seven minutes, and… Lydia glanced at the clock at the top right of her laptop. Unfortunately, it didn't count seconds. Still, she felt each second weigh on her heart, piling onto the very real ache there as she sat gazing out the window like a lovesick fool.

How could she miss someone so terribly that she'd only known for one day? For less than one day. They'd met yesterday in the evening, and it wasn't quite the afternoon yet.

Lydia had seen Wick under the fluorescent light of the Pemberley ballroom. She'd seen him under the moonlight with his face tilted up at the stars. And she'd seen him at dawn under the soft haze of the morning sun. She couldn't decide which vision of her beloved was most dear to her. The fact that she'd have a lifetime with him to make up her mind absolutely thrilled her.

She wanted to see him now in the afternoon sun. Closing her laptop, Lydia reached for her phone. Her thumb froze over the circular button that would bring the device to life.

Should she call him?

Would that appear too needy?

They were just starting this relationship, after all.

But they had both pledged forever.

Maybe she should text instead of call?

Lydia pressed her thumb to unlock her phone. When she tapped on her Contacts app, her thumb froze again as she realized she didn't even have his phone number. He was her fiancé, the man she was going to spend the rest of her life with, and she didn't have his phone number.

Her heart, which had been fluttering at the notion of connecting with him again, went light. She felt slightly dizzy from the weightlessness in her chest and the breathlessness in her lungs. Caught between the feelings of anxiety and anticipation, a wave of giddiness settled on Lydia's shoulders. She threw back her head and laughed.

Lydia couldn't wait to tell Wick this story. She felt certain he'd get a laugh out of her antics himself. But that would have to wait until they came face to face again.

When she got the giggles out, she ran her thumb over the face of her phone again. This time she did tap on the screen to call someone.

"Hey, girl, hey," said Emma.

"You will not believe what happened to me last night."

"Oh, I know exactly what happened to you last night.
