Chapter Seven

Beauty and the Beast

Rayne tried to relax as her belly stiffened once more. It wasn’t a contraction, at least not the labor kind. She was sure of that. She looked around the room and at the four pairs of eyes staring back at her. She was especially trying to avoid the gaze of one of them. He kept looking at her as if she were Mecca, or the Holy Trinity, and he couldn’t wait to get his hands on her. Yes, sure, Rayne would have felt the same way if she still wasn’t in a state of shock. That morning, all she’d expected was Duke’s arrival that afternoon. He had gone for a one-day business trip and she was anxious about his return. She missed him. Plus, they had left their conversation at a weird stopping place, the day before.

A knock on the door had her struggling out of her chair.

“I’ll get it,” Reno offered.

“No, please let me.” Rayne didn’t actually have to get the door. One of the staff could have done it. However, none were in sight and she needed to get out of the spotlight for a moment.

It had been twenty minutes since Danny’s brothers had come into her home and announced that she was their long-lost sister. Kat and AJ were with them, too. But Kat didn’t look like she wanted to be in that situation. It might have been because Duke wasn’t there with them. As she reached the door, she hoped it would be Duke, maybe having forgotten his keys and needing to be let in. But it wasn’t. Jake stood there with a bouquet of roses in his hand. Rayne was a little confused as to why he was there, but he was definitely a welcome distraction.

“Hi...what’s with the face?” He asked.

“No face,” she mumbled. Rayne led him into the living room and made him sit next to her.

Now that Jake was there, a familiar person, she felt comfortable enough to engage the strangers who had walked in to her home, claiming to be family. “Let me catch you up, Jake. This is Adrian and Katherine Ross.”

“I know Mrs. Henry—Ross—I used to work for their family, remember?” Jake cut in as he nodded his salutations.

“Ha! Yes, right. So these two—”

“I know them. They are Daniella’s brothers.”

“Yes. What you don’t know, what I didn’t know, is that they are also my brothers.”

Silence covered the room like a thick, wet blanket. Everyone else seemed to be adapting to the news just fine, including Jake. Apparently, she was the only one who felt water-boarded at that moment.

“I see the resemblance between you and Mr. Kent,” Jake said.

“Which Mr. Kent?” Rayne sighed. She turned to her brothers, not sure what to say. She had searched for her brothers for so long, ’til she gave up. She had finally settled into her new life, trying to make it as uncomplicated as possible. Rayne was just trying to make her family with Duke work. They had already been through so much and here was something else to be thrown into the mixing bowl.
