CHAPTER 12

Aurora spent the afternoon devouring magazines that the guests had left behind. She pulled the entire stack from the communal bookshelves in the hallway, wanting to also use the pictures as a way to absorb what life on land was like. She was so engrossed in flipping through the glossy pages, that she barely heard the knock at her door.

“Hey,” Mirra poked her head in when Aurora responded.

“Hi,” Aurora said. “I’m just doing a quick study of these to see what I can learn.”

“I see,” Mirra said. She raised an eyebrow at one of the gossip magazines Aurora held up. “Well, it’s certainly a part of society – but not all of it. These are the famous people.”

“Famous for what? Being Queens?” Aurora studied a woman who wore a glittery dress that barely covered her butt.

“They wish…” Mirra laughed. “A lot of them are actors and actresses.”

“I’m not familiar…” Aurora shook her head.

“Of course, so you probably haven’t watched a movie or a television show?” Mirra shook her head and glanced at the window where the last of the sun’s rays kissed the sky. “Listen, that’s a whole different type of entertainment that we’ll show you when we have time. Basically, it’s like storytelling through physically acting it out. And then you use costumes and sets…it creates a whole mood. It’s recorded, so people can watch it at different times on their devices.”

“Like on the phone?” Aurora asked. Now she wanted to see a movie.

“Correct. I promise we’ll do a movie night soon, but we should get in the water. If your parents moved on to the next islands, we might have a good swim ahead of us tonight.”

“You’re certain you want to come? I can go on my own. I’m used to dealing with them,” Aurora said. She really wanted Jolie and Mirra to join her, but in her old life people were always doing what she wanted because she was a princess. Here she wanted people to do things with her because they chose to do so. Because, at the end of the day, if she stayed – she’d no longer be royalty. Which meant she’d have to learn to do things on her own. The idea was more exciting than unnerving, and that told Aurora a lot about where her heart lay. Not just with Nathan, but also for what she wanted for her future.

“Of course we are going to come with you. I suspect it will help reassure your parents that you’re safe to be here with us and maybe they won’t try to force you to come home with them,” Mirra said.

“That’s what I’m hoping,” Aurora said. The sound of the waves hitting the sand carried to her on the breeze, and the ocean called to her – as it always did.

“Nathan called for you. We realized that without a phone, you don’t really have a way to communicate with him. We’ll have to remedy that once you speak to your parents, but for now he’s wondering if you’d like to have dinner tomorrow? He’ll pick you up if so.
