Chapter Thirteen
She woke with a groan followed by a muttered curse.
âThere she is.â
At his voice, she turned her head enough to see Roarkeâjeans and a teeâsitting on the sofa with his feet up, his PPC in his hand.
âIs there a half ton of cat on my ass?â
âThere is indeed. I canât decide if heâs there to guard you from any and all intruders or just keep you down until you got some sleep.â
Reaching back, she scratched Galahadâs head before rolling him off.
âYouâve been home awhile,â she began, then checked the time. âShit! It was supposed to be twenty minutes, thirty at the outside. I was out for over an hour.â
âAnd benefited from it. Hungry?â
She sat up, scrubbed her hands over her face. âI had a nosh earlier. I guess a lot earlier.â
âA nosh?â
âJewish deli, slice of babka. It was really good. I could eat, butââ
âSpaghetti and meatballs?â
âIâd say that was hitting below the belt, but itâs dead-on.â
âThereâs cherry pie.â
She had a weakness for all things pie.
âLooking out for me, pal?â
âWhenever I can, but this oneâs Summerset. He made it all today. He heard about the second girl. Cooking keeps his mind occupied.â
She nodded, slid out of bed. âMurder does that with mine.â
âWeâll set up in your office. Have a meal, a glass of Chianti, and youâll tell me.â
She started to nod again, then remembered and dug a hand in her pocket. As he rose, she held out the cash sheâd pulled.
He looked at it, at her, with eyes suddenly and dangerously cool.
âWhy in bloody hell would you want to start a row?â
âI donât. Iâve got too much to do to fight. So just listen, okay? Listen,â she insisted. âI know weâve been here before, and mostly resolved things. I get you think itâs insulting, especially since you buy all my damn clothes, and whatever goes into the spaghetti Iâm about to eat. But thatâs just not it.â
âWhat is it then?â
âItâs on me. Completely on me, and I hate that I canât at least shove a part of it on you. We could schedule a fight then, when I had more time, andââshe had to admit itââIâd like that a hell of a lot better.â
âShould I check my book?â he asked, all too politely.
Her hacklesâwhatever the hell they wereâwent up hard when he used that tone on her.
But.
âNo, because, fuck it, itâs on me. Iâve gotten careless, and that makes me feel stupid and, well, careless. I didnât run short before you. Maybe skimmed close to it, but I paid more attention. I had to. Okay, Iâve got to sort this out so I can pay the rent, and get some crap coffee, like that. Now I donât pay attention. Not enough. I forget to pay attention.â
âYou donât need to.â
âBut I do. I do need to. Do you want me to feel stupid?â
He only lifted his eyebrow. âIt would seem thatâs in your hands, not mine.â
âOh, fucking fuck.â Turning away, she tried counting to ten. Made it to five. âThis money thing makes me feel stupid, and makes you feel insulted.
