Chapter Nineteen

Daniel

Daniel stepped out of the tent. The moon was high in the sky and his spirit soared even higher. It was the kind of night where it felt like he had the entire world at his feet. He felt great, like everything would just fall into place and nothing could ever go wrong.

He got about two steps before something went wrong.

“Why were you in my tent?” asked Shana. She stood in the middle of the path between the tents with her arms crossed. That and her full ranger uniform was just a little bit intimidating.

“Looking for you!” said Daniel, thinking fast. “Hey, you look hungry. Is that little cafe in your HQ still open?”

“Well, I haven’t eaten, but I was planning on—”

“Great!” said Daniel. He took Shana by the shoulder and practically dragged her the other way, down the path towards the park offices.

Shana pulled his hand off her arm, and said, “Ok, whatever. But guess what? I have news! No wait, I’ll show you…”

“Show me what?” he asked.

“Actually, there really isn’t anything to show. No wonder people say this is a dumb Class,” said Shana.

Daniel’s ears perked up, “Wait. Class? You have a Class?”

“Yep! I’m officially a [Scout],” said Shana.

“Oh. I thought you said you were going for [Ranger],” said Daniel. Not that it was actually his decision, but Henry really seemed to have his heart set on someone in the party getting the [Nemesis] skill.

“You said I was going for [Ranger]. And that’s still possible. I checked with Henry first, and he said that I’ll be able to choose once I earn the [Ranger] Class, whether I want to switch or keep on as a [Scout]. Getting [Scout] was super easy. I just had to join the Girl Scouts. I joined for real, too! I’m going to be a chaperone, we’re going to meet twice a month. It sounds like so much fun! This month they’re planning to—”

“Never mind that!” said Daniel. “Details! What does the Class do?”

There wasn’t a way to share status screens with other people, so Shana had to read her entire menu out loud for him.
