That week was the most miserable one that she had spent in Singapore so far. Even her first homesick week could not compare. For one thing, things at work did not cool off. On the contrary, the rumors got more rife in the middle of the week when Evan and Catriona went on a business trip together with another colleague. The look of speculation and pity in everyone’s eyes was more than Elaine could bear. This, added to her growing conviction that Evan and Catriona would get back together while on the trip, reduced her to a bundle of nerves at work.

At home, things weren’t great either. Her thumb had not completely healed so it wasn’t convenient for her to cook at home. She wouldn’t have minded eating out if she had some company now and then, but she didn’t feel like hanging out with any of the office people right then, and Kai was never around. She barely saw him the whole week. Every time she casually asked Ah Poh where he was, the answer was always the same — with Mei Mei. What made it even more annoying was the approving smile that always accompanied this piece of information. So what’s so great about this Melissa/Mei Mei, she felt like asking but never did. She ate a lot of takeaways and beans on toast that week.

If she had been looking forward to her parents’ visit before, she was fairly desperate to see them now. She couldn’t wait to escape from work and the flat for a few days. Since it would not have been possible to fit her parents and herself into her little room, the arrangement was that her parents would stay at a hotel and she would bunk over. She hung on with permanently gritted teeth while the week crept by on leaden feet.
