Though few, if any, can play like Tal, it is possible to look at such games and learn the tricks of the trade. In the next game French chess magazines raved over White’s 14th move, but after seeing Tal’s brilliancy it should come as no surprise to us:

Apicella – Collas

French Team Championship 1996

1 e4 c5 2 f3 e6 3 d4 cxd4 4 xd4 f6 5 c3 d6 6 e3 e7 7 f3 c6 8 d2 0-0 9 c4 a6 10 0-0-0 a5 11 e2 c7 12 g4 e8 13 g5 d7

14 g6!

The French press praised White’s attacking skill – which is fair enough – but Apicella is only following Tal’s example. As we saw in the previous game this is a great way of opening lines against the castled king – especially here because 14...fxe6 allows 15 xe6 followed by the powerful entry of the other knight on d5.

14...hxg6 15 h4 e5

Black signals his clear intention to establish a knight on c4. This is sufficient for White to conjure up a dazzling trap – again linked to the inclusion of the king’s rook in the onslaught.
