Chapter 15

Focusing on finishing my rounds of book delivery for the prison library was nearly impossible. Whether or not Kipp was genuine in his feelings—or whatever the hell that had been with Sabine, maybe magic of hers—it felt like I was quickly losing control over this assignment. Assuming I’d ever had control at all. Magic-less and locked in prison, maybe control had only ever been an illusion.

I had to stop letting myself get distracted. I’d come here to investigate a strange pattern of incarcerations. To see if there was anything supernaturally nefarious happening.

The quick answer was: yes. Something was going on. But I still had no idea what, only that it might also have involved a spontaneous combustion. The second one inside of a week that I’d witnessed.

What I wouldn’t give to have my magic right now. To be able to fully take in the magical auras around me. My senses seemed dulled without access to my magic. Like someone had cut off part of my vision.

I also wanted to be able to speak to Kipp. To ask what the hell that had been.

Why did I even care? Aside from Kipp being my partner—and not one of my own choosing—did I really care about him? He was nice, sure. If not greener than green. But he’d thrown himself wholeheartedly into this mission, and he seemed like he would follow the SBI’s code to the letter.

I knew in my gut that that kind of guy would never leave anyone behind. So, as far as Kipp was concerned, I knew I could trust him.

So then why did seeing him wrapped up in Sabine’s arms bother me so much?

The wheel on the book cart squeaked loudly as I rounded a corner. It startled me out of my spiraling train of thoughts. I normally wasn’t like this on an assignment. But somehow Brighton was turning me into some sort of agent incapable of thinking clearly—and I hated it.

Without clear thought, the assignment fell apart. And if the assignment fell apart, I’d have another unsolved case, an unfinished mission, on my board at home.

I approached the next cell and prayed it wasn’t anyone even remotely tied to Nikos and Sabine. No such luck.

“Hi,” I said to the vampire inside the cell. She was short and appeared forever frozen somewhere in her twenties. Her red eyes were squinted, and she was doubled over, rocking back and forth.

“I am chosen,” she mumbled as she rocked. Her brunette hair fell off her shoulders and covered her face. “Chosen, chosen, chosen.” Each new word from her lips grew more excited and pained at the same time.

I stepped closer, through the open cell door, and got as close as I dared to the distressed vampire. “What do you mean ‘chosen’?”

She kept rocking, ignoring me, and the only indication something was coming was the sudden warming of the air.

Gods. My stomach sank and, despite every instinct telling me to get out of that cell, I instead stepped closer to the vampire. “What do you mean? What’s going on in here?”

Maybe she was just crazy.
