Armament and Modifications

The main battery consisted of three centerline-mounted 4.7-inch Year 3 single mounts which were only capable of engaging surface targets. Antiaircraft protection was provided by two twin 25mm mounts abreast the bridge. One depth charge launcher was fitted aft on the quarterdeck and 18 Type 95 depth charges carried. When completed, the ships did not carry hydrophones or sonar.

In 1942, Type 93 sonar was installed and the number of depth charges carried increased to 36. In 1943, the depth charge load was increased to 60. Type 22 radar, primarily used for surface search, was also fitted. An 80mm mortar was also fitted forward of the bridge. In 1944, the need to increase the ships’ antiaircraft strength became urgent. Late in the year, a Type 13 air search radar was fitted to the mainmast. The original 25mm fit was increased from two twin mounts to five triple mounts, with the replacement of the original mounts located abreast the bridge and the addition of a triple mount forward of the bridge and two more abaft the stack.
