Chapter thirty

Toulouse, 30 October, present day

Sabnock? More Sadcock, according to Mephy.

It’s eerily quiet in the streets. The interruption stirs a thought, one that makes me feel incredibly guilty for not having thought of it before. I stop dead, then turn to look at Phillipe. ‘What about the unTalented? The residents of Toulouse? Who possessed them? Where are they now?’ Because the Good God knows that would be just the sort of bullshit I’d expect the fucker to do. He already sacrificed his ally in the fight, stabbing him in the back – or stabbing him in the tether, but you know what I mean. Killing a fuckload of humans wouldn’t even have given him pause.

‘That wasn’t Sabnock.’ De Monteguard winces, his cheek muscles tensing, his jaw clenching as though the words themselves delivered an uppercut, slamming it shut. Then I remember. Caacrinolaas was his first ever friend. Then he got ring side seats to see what his so-called “friend” was prepared to do to the rest of his species just to slow us down a little. Or maybe not even that. Maybe just for shits and giggles. I’ve no idea.

It takes him a moment to get himself together, back under control. ‘His connection to them would have been severed. I think they’re back to being themselves.’

That’s a great relief. For a moment. Then all the other questions start to hit. Do they remember what’s been happening? To them? By them? Images of the citizens of my city coming to, blood-stained, broken, all those terrible traumas burning into their brain, the weight of the things they did, even if they’d no control whilst they did them?

There’s no relief to be found in that.

There’s also nothing I can do to save them right now. Nothing that will keep them safe except stopping the fucker who did this to them – or the mastermind behind it at least – and making sure he can never do anything so terrible to anyone ever again. Because there’s no safety on offer – not for anyone, anywhere – while his plans are in motion.

Mephy’s not been paying any attention to this conversation. Instead, he’s still muttering rude names and growling about what a wanker Sabnock is over and over again.

I sigh. ‘Okay, Meph, I think we get the picture. You don’t like the guy.’

‘No, you don’t! You don’t get it at all! Millenia of him whining incessantly. Never doing anything fun like killing people or torturing us until we screamed. No kinky sex or even any dirty fantasies uploaded into the collective wank bank –’

‘You have a…’ I shake my head, force my mouth closed. It’d be too easy to get distracted. ‘Never mind.’

Mephy carries on like he was never even interrupted. ‘There was this one time I caught him whipping himself. Giving his back a right good thrashing all the way down to the bone. I could see the white glistening in between the rasher-stripped flesh. Fantastic work. Really top notch.’

I’ve no idea where this story is going.
