Chapter 7

It took her only five minutes to pack. She drove back to the airport, returned the car, and headed straight for the terminal. After going through security, she found a bench. There was still half an hour before her flight started to board. She tried Michel King’s number for the third time, but there was still no answer. She was about to hang up when she heard a voice.

“Who is this?”

“Mr. King?”

“I don’t talk with strangers.”

“Mr. King, I’m Grace Sanders. Yesterday I was with Mrs. Mayda Peyton, or Mayda Larson as you may know her.”

“I haven’t seen Mayda in a long time. I don’t think I can help you.”

“Just over nine years ago there was an account in Mayda’s name, but it was also in your name and...”

“That money in Vegas... I swear Mayda’s the one who blew all the money in the city.”

“Yes, but there was a bit of money left in Preston Bank that couldn’t be used until both daughters had come of age, which has just occurred.”

There was a long silence until King answered, “That money...”

“Yes, that money. You have to sign for Mayda’s daughters to be able to receive it.”

“Why didn’t she call me herself?”

“I’m her lawyer,” Grace answered. She didn’t like lying, but she knew it was the only way to get information out of a man like that. What surprised her most was that what she had invented out of thin air seemed to actually strike a chord.

“Ok. So what do you want from me? I’m not in Colorado anymore.”

“Yes, I know.”

“This goes back a long way, but if Mayda needs me to sign something, send me the papers.”

“Why did you and Mrs. Larson have an account together?”

“We were business partners, but that was a long time ago.”

“Business partners?”

“Yeah, we bought a little casino in Vegas, but things didn’t go well. The creditors took everything but what was for the girls.”

“Thanks for everything; I’ll send you the forms.”

Grace hung up, pensive. Mayda was not the spendthrift she seemed; nor had she left her girls penniless. She had gone to Las Vegas looking for a new future.

The stewardess called for passengers to board, and Grace grabbed her carry-on and walked toward the gate door. She passed through the jet bridge to the plane. As she got settled in her seat, she was glad the plane was bigger than the one she had arrived on. She closed her eyes and tried to think about dinner. Her parents would be arriving the next day, and she had a lot to get done.

On the one hand, she cringed at the thought of dining with them; on the other, she was thrilled to see them again. After all, they were her parents. Family was a mixed bag: sometimes they were like nails down a chalkboard; other times the very same people were a safe haven in a storm. These thoughts led her back to Mayda and her family. Each woman had a very different perspective on their peculiar family, but now Grace was unsure if any of them had been completely sincere.
