Chapter Six

By the time Zamir and I land at the airport in Huntsville, there are multiple stories speculating about what we’ve got going on. There has been a variety of reactions to what is the hottest celebrity news of the day. Some people are calling us #couplegoals while others have decided I’m a homewrecking slut. Zamir doesn’t care about all the fuss, but it bothers me.

“Why is it always women that feel the need to slut shame women?” It’s a question that I would love an answer to.

“Just turn off your phone and stop looking at it,” Zamir suggests as we load into the bright red convertible that he’s rented. If I have to rent a car, I don’t usually get anything flashy, but he wouldn’t be deterred. “Reading all that garbage won’t change what it says. It’ll just sour your mood.”

“It’s hard not to be in a sour mood when hundreds of people are badmouthing me.”

“You know that you didn’t do anything wrong. You can’t let what a bunch of uninformed people say get to you. In this line of work, people are going to say a lot of dishonest things about you. You’ve got to learn to ignore it. Not everything needs a reaction.”

I lock my cell phone and stuff it in the back pocket of my pants. “Is that what you do?”

Dryly he chuckles. “I’m constantly accused of being a serial cheater. If I didn’t stay off social media, my publicist would be working overtime to get me out of trouble.”

A wrinkle forms on my forehead between my eyebrows. “Why do you and Rainy break up and get back together so much?”

He shrugs his shoulders as he carefully drives. “Do you really want to know?” I nod my head in response. He lets out a weighted sigh. “Last year, she was pregnant. It wasn’t planned, but we were both happy when we found out. She moved in with me and I started looking at engagement rings. We were going to start a family. One day she said she didn’t feel good and by nighttime, we were at the hospital, and the doctor told us that she had miscarried. Going through something like that should have made us closer, but it didn’t. We both dealt with it in our ways. We stopped talking to each other, then one day she left with all her stuff. That should’ve been the end, but she reached out to me weeks later and we reconnected. Now we keep going back and forth. We both know it’s not working anymore.”

“If you both know it’s not working then why won’t you end it?”

“I don’t know why she won’t, but I feel guilty every time I try. I went from wanting to spend the rest of my life with her to hoping that I don’t. That’s fucked up.”

“Would you look at engagement rings if she wasn’t pregnant?”

“I don’t know.” He huffs out a breath. “I wish I knew, but I don’t. We weren’t doing as bad as we are now back then, but we weren’t as happy as we used to be.
