FOURTEEN

We pulled into the driveway next to Dan’s patrol car. My headlights hit his face before I threw the gearshift into Park. His features turned crimson as he charged toward the driver’s door.

“Uh-oh. Chief Murphy doesn’t look too happy,” Nora whispered. “Lock the doors.” She slunk down in her seat trying to hide.

“Where in the hell have you been?” I felt the heat coming from his breath after he almost jerked the driver’s door off its hinges to get at me.

“Joy riding and pricing Land Rovers,” I said in my sweetest voice. Reaching for the key, I turned off the ignition, then fumbled with the lights and the visor. Anything to avoid making direct eye contact with him. His range of anger I would have put in the pissed-off zone.

“That’s not funny, Callie.” His tone, sharp as a blade, could’ve cut steel. He stood with his arms outstretched on the truck’s roof, blocking me with his hulk.

Mickey stomped out of the house, barefoot with clenched jaws. He pointed a finger at Carmen and took a stand next to Dan.

Carmen opened the door and handed Gregory over to Mickey. “He’s asleep, and unless you want to be up with him all night long, I suggest you don’t raise your voice.” Ever so calm, Carmen stepped around him and went to the rear to retrieve the luggage. Yadar exploded out of the back end of the Explorer, barking at the top of his lungs at no one in particular, but I knew where he directed his fury.

Nora almost crawled over Ms. Ida to get out, pushing her as fast as she could to get her moving out the other side. Everyone disappeared, except Ms. Mattie with Hannah on the floorboard between her feet.

“I didn’t know if you’d been attacked again. I didn’t know if you were lying in a ditch somewhere dead. I didn’t know what had happened to you.” His breathing staggered. “Callie, you can’t take off like this and not leave a note. My God, woman, I have every officer on the force out there searching for you. You have been gone for hours.”

“When were you attacked?” Ms. Mattie hung on our every word. She hadn’t yet opened her car door and glared at us wide-eyed. She stroked Hannah who looked like a fifty-pound pill bug curled in a ball.

“Yesterday, at the church,” Dan answered for me. It came out harsh, and I felt a bit embarrassed by his demeanor.

Yadar, still ranting, jumped into the back seat through the open door, slinging spittle at the back of my head. “That’s enough, Yades,” Dan and I yelled at the same time.

“What did you do to him to piss him off?” Dan asked.

“He had to ride in the cargo area.” Our eyes met and Dan cracked a smile. The redness lightened and his coloring returned to normal. So did the tension around us. With a soft nudge to his ribs, Dan stepped back to let me climb out of the car.

As soon as I stood with both feet on the ground, he wrapped his arms around me and pulled me close.
