How many TAs did it take to change a lightbulb?

Just one, as it turned out.

Nora screwed the bulb in, letting it flicker on before skirting around the edge of the desk. The bookshelves loomed against the walls, casting long shadows in the room. They were ancient, creaking things stuffed with volumes that had seen better days. Their leather spines were faded, and their pages yellowed, each one carrying a strong musk.

The office suited Professor Everleigh, filled with brilliant articles, but completely disorganized. Papers littered every surface, piled high on the desk, the floor, and even the windowsill. Among these piles were notebooks filled with scribbles, loose papers with hastily jotted notes, and even old photographs.

She went through the list of books Everleigh wanted removed and destroyed, she came across a particularly old tome, its cover worn to the point of being nearly unrecognizable. She pulled it out, a cloud of dust puffing into the air, making her cough. Wiping away the dust, she opened the book to find it filled with intricate drawings and notes in Latin.

She glanced at the door, half-expecting Everleigh to burst in and catch her… What? Snooping? She was doing her job. But even holding the book in her hands, something felt off. She couldn’t put her finger on what.

Thank God for cell phones.

Nora opened her translation app and took photos, page by page, until she finished the first chapter. It was an introduction, detailing the contents of the book on death curses.

Why would Professor Everleigh have a book on that? Blood magic, especially magic like this, was forbidden.

The more she read, the more she realized the rarity and value of the knowledge ensconced within its pages. Professor Everleigh had mentioned in passing his intention to clear out some of the older, less useful texts from his collection. The fate of many would be the recycling bin or, worse, the shredder. A pang of desperation hit her—the thought of such a unique book being destroyed was unbearable.

Nora told herself that Professor Everleigh wouldn’t miss this one book. With a glance around the silent room, as if to ensure the shadows themselves held no objections, she slipped the grimoire into her bag.
