EIGHTEEN

For the first time in her life, Noelle Swan wanted to throw a hissy fit.

She was not well-versed in them, mind you. In the grand scheme of things, eighteen was not that old, but Noelle considered herself an adult. She had always been praised for being mature for her age, though in comparison with her other two siblings, there was no competition. Noelle loved her brother and sister, but come on. Anyone with half a brain could see who among them was the most reasonable.

She would never (almost) fracture another girl’s jaw over a few silly words, no matter how insulting they might be. She would never cry after being rejected by a boy (or, in Jax’s case, a girl). And she would certainly never say hateful things to her parents, even in a fit of anger.

Noelle caused the least trouble of the three siblings because she stayed at home all day. Never having to interact with others in person or deal with their hatred (warranted or not), never having to hold back one’s anger and words for fear of losing a job… Well, wasn’t it only natural that, when having to experience these things for the first time, Noelle would make mistakes?

That was how she rationalized it to herself, anyway.

“You must make sure your parents either lose their accents or don’t speak at all,” Sabine instructed, one of many rules she had been harping about all morning. Yeah, if Noelle wanted to follow more rules, she’d hightail it back to China and rejoin her parents’ sect. “Otherwise, Lord Mayfield may be incensed. And you do not want to see what a trueblood looks like when he is incensed.”

Do you really want to see what I look like incensed? Noelle wanted to ask, but held her tongue. She would not have a fit. Probably.

“Of course,” Noelle replied calmly. “We won’t interrupt you.” As you stumble through an explanation.

Really, Sabine Everleigh made one question how an insufferable person such as herself was able to not only receive a high degree from Columbia, but get a job as a professor! It seemed most things Noelle and her parents tried to explain about cultivation went in one ear and out the other. If insanity was doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting different results, then Sabine Everleigh was certifiable.

“Good, good. Remember, we need Lord Mayfield’s support and resources if we’re going to continue with our research,” Sabine said with a smile. As usual, everything about her seemed clinical. Not a hair stood out of place, brushed back into a tight bun exactly centered atop her head. Her hair was so pale, it almost blended in with her skin, giving the illusion of baldness from some angles. “Everyone, get in your places!”

Noelle stood beside her parents behind a lab table, while the other researchers stood in the front with their clipboards. Sabine glided toward the stairs by the door, the big smile on her face worthy of a pageant queen.

It was times like these
