Chapter 21

The next morning, Maya was called off to help out the Watch Guard deal with some crisis or another. When I woke up she was on her telecorder, talking rapidly with the other heroes while she pulled on her uniform and headed out the door. She kissed me farewell and said that Hoplite and Nema were both sending trainers to the Estate to look after my training for the next few months and that I should expect them some time tomorrow.

Zach, or Doc Fletcher to everyone else, headed off with Maya as well, opening up a portal right in the main foyer and heading through it with several of his sorcerers and a few young adult supers who all had their own customized uniforms and looked geared up for battle.

I noticed several supers and sorcerers around the same age who looked a bit disgruntled that they weren’t yet allowed to go on missions with the Doc, but everyone fell in line.

The rest of that day was mine to do with as I liked.

Naturally, I chose to spend it with Lydia and Lily, getting settled into our new space and getting acquainted with how things worked around here. Veronica took us on a tour and I pushed Lydia around in a hover chair while we explored the property and did our best to memorize the layout. She showed us where Lily would be staying and where she would be receiving an education from some overqualified tutors alongside several other non-superpowered children. The number of heroes in the world who did not possess any inherent super abilities or magical talent was pretty astounding, actually. Apparently there were a whole lot of world-class mercenaries, former spies, and multi-billionaires with nothing better to do with their time than join Outfielder’s ‘minor league’ crime fighter teams.

Lydia expressed an interest in seeing if she could learn to wield magic just like Zach had, and Veronica basically said “sure why not?” (or at least that was the vibe she gave off) and told her that she could start studying and working with a sorcerer mentor as soon as she was fully recovered. Which around here, with magic and all the best medical technology money could buy, was only going to be another day or two at absolute most.

Veronica asked one of the young sorcerers to test my wife for any magical affinity, and the kid did some weird finger dancing and then peered at her through his fingers like he was holding up a spy glass. Judging by the way he did a double-take, and the impressed look in Veronica’s eyes after he explained his findings, I guess she made the cut.

The way Lydia’s face lit up when she heard she could learn magic?

Priceless.

We spent most of our day lounging in our suite and talking to one another about nothing in particular. After I filled her in on everything that had happened she mostly just wanted to make sure that I was sure I wanted to go through with this whole superhero training regime.
