The chart in Figure 4.30 shows the location of M46 in the constellation of Puppis . You will notice how tiny the 27-minute plate-solved square image is in relation to the size of the constellation. Images in this book range from almost 4° down to this image size of 27’. The magnitude -1.44 Sirius (9-Alpha Canis Majoris or HIP 32349) in Canis Major is not too far away towards the west. The angular separation between M46 and Sirius is 13° 51’. Sirius lies at a distance of a mere 8.6 ly. The star 15-Rho Puppis (Turais or HIP 39757) sits to the south west of Messier 46 at an angular distance of 11° 15’. This star has a magnitude of 2.83 and is at a distance of 62.73 ly.
