CHAPTER 6

“Oh, no. Don’t worry, Cam, sweetie. You’ve never bothered us. Right, we’re not a real couple.” Mandy was giddy as we walked to the carousel. “Hey, Jackie. You look like you’re trying really hard not to say something you wanna say. What’s that? Nothing? Are you sure? Okay, tell me about it when you feel like doing so.”

“Is everything all right?” I asked. I just recalled I was supposed to be having a romantic night out with Cam, and I wanted to check if I was doing fine.

“Peachy!” she replied. “Cam’s been very understanding about the way you treated me as your date in front of Justin and Rose. She says now she’s more in love with you than ever.”

“Wow. Am I the perfect date or what?” I said teasingly and tightened the clasp of her hand in mine.

Mandy looked up in my eyes. “Um…Rick?”

“Yes?” I smiled at her, trying my best to keep my composure and conceal my expectations. Her tone was softer than usual, and her cheeks were blushing as she offered me a smile. She looked like she was ready to offer me more, such as a kiss or an adult-themed steamy night together.

“Thank you so much for pretending to be my boyfriend in front of them. I was caught off guard by that encounter. It was an uncomfortable surprise, and…” Then she giggled. “I might have punched him really hard in the nose if it was not for your intervention.”

“Hmm, you have a point. Maybe I could have done that.” She tilted her head. “Then again, his reaction to your mention of his gambling debt—it was epic. At first, when he was bragging about staying at The Plaza and so on, I doubted what you previously told me about his financial trouble and thought maybe you just said it to make me feel better, but Rose’s words proved you were right. Anyway, thank you so much for helping keep me from getting stuck in a deep dark hole of depression.”

“Don’t worry about it. You know what? I’m always here for you.” I held out my arms in case she was in the mood for a big hug. To my pleasure, she accepted my offer and snuggled in my embrace. I was thankful for our encounter with Justin and Rose. At this moment, I’d ninety-nine percent forgotten about dating Cam the ghostly witness. As for finding Harry Irving’s killer, it felt like something that happened in my previous life.

I wanted to savor the fuzzy feelings of her in my arms for a while longer, but good times didn’t last forever.

“Oops, my bad.” She looked to her right, pulling away from me. “Cam has just urged me to go ride the carousel.”

“All right, Cam, darling. Let’s go and hitch a ride together!” I said, trying my best to sound excited. “Which horse do you wanna ride? Or, would you
