Plucking Legume for Food

The figures depicted in Plucking Legume are the two sons of the Shang dynasty Guzhu monarch (located in present day Lulongnan, Hebei Province), Boyi and Shuqi, who renounced their inheritance and fled the country, relying on Ji Chang, King Wen of Zhou (1152–1056 BC). Shortly after King Wen’s death, his son Ji Fa (d. 1043 BC) launched a war against the current emperor King Zhou of Shang (c. 1105–1045 BC). Boyi and Shuqi, believing this was a major act of rebellion, offered stern advice to Ji Fa. Ji Fa ignored the advice and continued his war against the emperor of the Shang dynasty, ultimately gaining victory and overthrowing the Shang dynasty to establish the Zhou dynasty. He is known in history as King Wu of Zhou.

After this, Boyi and Shuqi refused to eat the food of the Zhou court. They fled to the Shouyang Mountains (in modern day Yongji County, Shanxi Province), where they plucked legume for sustenance. Ultimately, they starved to death.
