When I was younger it was very important, because it was sort of like being clean if you know what I mean. You haven’t had nothing so you’re clean. Getting older, it’s not as important now, as I said … I’m tending to go that way a bit now as if I want to try something, but I haven’t decided yet.

Moving into adulthood and going to university or having access to the nightclub scene was identified by several in-transition interviewees as being a likely change in set and setting which might well stimulate their drugs initiation or diversification into dance drugs. One young man who was beginning to experiment with amphetamines could see his first E around the corner.

Just to experiment really. That’s it. Just to experiment, just to try them. I suppose the atmosphere of clubs makes me want to try them … not really because my friends are doing it, it’s because I want to experiment myself. I mean, my friends never ever pressure me at all, no peer group pressure at all, its basically my choice.
