David and Jason arrived at the hospital within fifteen minutes—both of them shifting into their animals and running there. Perrin met them at the lobby and took them up to the ICU where Danvers and several of the Brotherhood members and Rennie stood in the waiting room.

They immediately surrounded David and Jason and all talked at once. Apparently, they didn’t know any more than David and Jason did and the Sheriff had ordered Perrin to bring them all to the hospital. Jason held up his hand and everyone went silent. He nodded to the Sheriff. David noticed Danvers looked exhausted. It made sense. He’d been working this case since Ezra came to town.

“At about seven o’clock this evening, a person fitting the description of Ezra Tremere walked into the ICU ward and demanded to see the Walkers. On the Brotherhood’s suggestion, we’d already removed the nurses and doctors we believed had been influenced by Tremere’s power. When he was refused and ordered to leave—” Danvers rubbed at his face. “That’s when he…”

“Had a temper tantrum,” David said. “He’s known for acting like a petulant child when he doesn’t get his way.” He looked at Jason. “That also explains the wind.”

“Well, that temper tantrum ended two lives and nearly killed Dr. Helena.” Danvers looked shaken. “According to witnesses, Tremere tossed people and patients around like rag dolls while looking for the Walkers. When Dr. Helena came up to help, he grabbed her and…” the Sheriff winced. “He bit her.”

“Shit,” David said.

“Did he give her his blood?” Jason said. “Any sign of an attempted ghouling?”

“We don’t know. We do know he tortured her for nearly a half hour—locked in one of the doctor’s offices—before he left. When we found her she was barely alive.”

“May we see her?” one of the Brotherhood asked. The member was tall, slender, with golden hair and eyes that matched. Her skin was tanned and freckles dotted her cheeks. “We can tell if he’s started a ghouling process.”

“They’ll only let in two at a time.” He nodded to her.

David started forward but Danvers put his hand on David’s chest. “I need Rennie in there. Perrin’s already caught the scent and she needs it so she can share it with her pack.”

He backed up. “Does Ginger know?”

“I haven’t called her yet, but I need to, David. She has to know what’s happening. This guy’s crazy and he doesn’t seem to care who knows what he is. We have a code here, in Castle Falls, and the rule of law. And he’s broken all of it. I want him stopped.”

“So do we,” Jason said. He put his hand on David. “Go to Ginger and the others and tell them what’s happened. And make sure she’s well-guarded. We don’t know if the deaths of his people kindled his rampage.”

David understood Jason’s warning. If Ezra was already enraged by his missing victims and then discovers many of his people were dead, it could ignite another killing spree. He could even show up at Ginger’s house and take her.
