"You can't just walk out when things don't go your way, Lauren," Kip says.
"Why not?" I ask childishly.
We're in the living room, each of us on a couch, facing the other.
"You know why not. Oh, why the hell do I answer you? Now look ..."
"I hate look."
"Too bad. I told you why Meg didn't tell you about Ray and Blythe, and I know it hurt you, but you have to face the truth. You're very judgmental."
"I know," I say.
"Excuse me?"
"You heard me."
"Yes, I did. I'm glad that you can see that."
"Don't push it."
"But walking out on me like that is the real issue here."
"No. The real issue is that you kept that information from me."
"No, it isn't, Lauren. I have every right to keep certain things to myself."
"What else haven't you told me?" I ask suspiciously.
"Whatever it is I'm not going to tell."
"Then there is something!"
"God, you can be tiresome."
"Thanks."
"You're welcome."
"I'm going to ask you something very important and you have to tell me the truth. Do you promise?"
"Of course not."
"This has to do with the case, Kip."
"You really are something. If this isn't a form of blackmail, I don't know what is."
"Call it what you want."
"What is it?"
"Did Meg tell you who Topic A was?"
"No."
"Is that the truth?"
"Yes."
"Because he's a prime suspect and we don't know who he is and can't get a lead on him."
"She never told me."
"If she had?"
"This is stupid."
"No, it isn't. If she'd told you, would you tell me now?"
"Yes. I'd tell you now."
"But you wouldn't have told me before?"
"No."
I can't believe this woman. "Why not?"
"Because if Meg had told me who he was, it would've been in confidence. But now, I can see that it would be necessary and important to tell you."
"I still can't get over that you didn't tell me about Blythe and Ray."
"Look," she says, but stops abruptly. "How do you feel about listen?"
"Hate it."
"Tough. Look and listen," she says perversely. "I was entrusted with a secret and asked especially not to tell you. What could I do?"
"You could've told me."
"No, Lauren, I couldn't. Maybe if it were reversed you could, but I couldn't."
"Holier-than-thou," I accuse.
"It's the way I was raised, I can't help it."
"Oh, brother. And how was I raised, like a guttersnipe?"
"Guttersnipe?"
"Like a street urchin," I explain.
"I know what the word means. I could really throttle you sometimes. I don't know how you were raised and it doesn't matter. But I was raised to keep something that's confidential, confidential. What if I told people everything you tell me not to tell?"
"That's different."
"No it isn't. And I suppose you have no secrets from me."
"None that involve you," I whine.
"This didn't involve you. You're getting just like your mother."
"Don't make me hurt you," I say flippantly.
"Well, I'm sorry, but that's the kind of thing she'd say. The affair between Ray and Blythe had nothing to do with you."
"But it had to do with my best friend."
"And she didn't want you to know."
"So you had to be Ms. Perfect and not tell me.
