In the rare cases, muscles are completely destroyed; a disease called rhabdomyolysis. Large amounts of myoglobin, the main muscle protein, leaves the muscles and is excreted in the urine, and if too much myoglobin arrives at the kidneys in a short time, it may lead to renal failure.

A few years after the introduction of Bayer’s statin drug Baycol, fifty patients on such treatment were reported to have died from renal failure, and since then the number has doubled. The number of live patients with kidney failure must be much higher, because most of them will survive thanks to dialysis treatment or a kidney transplantation, but that number has not been given in any official report.
