Chapter 15

“To be honest, I thought he was a prick. I have never met anyone so pompous. Heck, he even makes you look humble. Granted he was brilliant, but he was such an asshole,” I remarked.

Fallon leaned back in his chair, watching me, his eyes dancing with amusement. I took a bite of my chicken and wondered how we had gotten on the current topic.

Friday evening had come all too soon, and the nearer it drew the more nervous I became. Thanks to all that happened the evening before, I’d not felt much like sleeping. In fact, I would have welcomed the nightmares with gruesome corpses rather than relive what had happened to Paul or dream about dinner with Fallon and where our evening might lead. I finally fell asleep at around five in the morning and woke a four short hours later to deal with Paul’s kids.

Not even the distractions of dealing with the kids and their pain and sorrow, or Lisa and her fury at my lack of including her in the escapade, helped cast the impending evening from my mind. Fallon had been true to his word; he managed Paul’s ex-wife, Patty. She held a reputation for being somewhat shrewish, and I wanted to be a fly on the wall when Fallon dealt with her. Hopefully it had been excruciating for him. I guessed I’d never know, because Patty stayed in the car when she and her husband Charles came to pick up Megan and Randy. Charles had been somber and subdued but, to my relief, he’d also been comforting to the kids and I was sure they were in good hands.

Now I was on the dreaded date. Surprisingly, the evening was a complete revelation for me. Apparently, when he wasn’t being an arrogant, condescending, controlling jerk, Agent Fallon was quite charming. Alarmingly so. He was easy to talk to and, get this, he even demonstrated a sense of humor. We spent the last hour talking about various topics, and the atmosphere was one that was both relaxed and companionable. And no, it wasn’t because so far, we’d only spoken about me.

He hadn’t asked me anything more about the prior evening. That was fine with me, as I’d decided to hide the memories of that night somewhere in the recesses of my mind where they couldn’t hurt me. I had years of honing my selective-memory-loss skills to avoid being hurt. It made being immortal much easier. Spending an eternity wallowing in grief was not an appealing concept.

So far this evening I’d regaled Fallon with the entire Elora saga. Well, except for my origins—something he desperately wanted to know about and was still irked that I wouldn’t share. Instead I told him of the places I’d lived; what I’d done to conceal my immortality especially in the times of witch hunts, superstition, and now computers; how I became a rock musician—I spent a lot of time on this topic as it was dear to my heart—and how and
