CHAPTER 20
If I could lie in his arms like this forever, I would. Iâve never been more comfortable than when Iâm wrapped up in him. After our shower, where he delivered on his promise to wash my hair, he went about drying it for me as well. Iâm curious as to how he got so good at blow-drying. I wasnât going to ask though. We ordered room service and put on a sappy rom-com.
He says it was for me, but I think he likes the movie just a little too much for that to have been true. Iâm more of a horror film kind of girl. Rom-coms have never been my thing. I feel like he knows that and is just torturing me with this nonsense.
A knock at the door gives me an excuse to get up. âDid you order something?â I ask him.
âYep. Iâll get it. Wait here.â He throws on a pair of sweats before heading to the door. When he returns, heâs holding two black paper bags.
âWhatâd you get?â I ask.
âItâs a surprise for later. But for nowâ¦â He pauses as he puts the bags down next to his side of the bed. Pulling out a deck of cards and a box of chips, he says, âItâs time for that poker game. I really hope youâre prepared to deliver on that bet, Miss McKinley. Because, I assure you, I fully plan to claim my prize.â He smirks.
âIâm prepared, but are you?â
âSure thing, babe. Whatever you want.â I watch as Ash removes the cards from the deck. He then hands me the box of chips. âWeâll start with one thousand each. Split them,â he tells me.
âSure thing.â I smile sweetly, all the while wondering how the hell Iâm going to win this game. I know Iâm good, but itâs really more about luck than skill. Something tells me Ash is going to be able to read each of my tells.
âWeâre playing Heads-up. You know the drill?â Ash asks.
âYep.â I donât tell him that Iâve been playing this game with my mum since I could recognize numbers.
âReady? Iâll go first as the dealer. After each hand, weâll swap.â He starts by placing the small blind.
I put out the big blind. I win the first hand with a straight, beating Ashâs set of pairs. He grumbles something about beginnerâs luck.
As it turns out, it was more than just beginnerâs luck because after four rounds, Iâve collected all of his chips.
âMaybe I should be taking you downstairs to play. Tell me, why the hell do you cheat with Ben if you can play this well?â
âBecause we can.â I shrug, not really having an answer for that question.
âOkay, well, you win, babe. How about we deliver on your little fantasy of having both holes filled at once?â
Is he serious? I begin to panic. What the actual fuck? There is no way heâs planning on sharing me with anyone else, is there? Shit, maybe I should have let him win. As that thought crosses my mind, I wonder just how easily I actually won.
