CHAPTER 20

If I could lie in his arms like this forever, I would. I’ve never been more comfortable than when I’m wrapped up in him. After our shower, where he delivered on his promise to wash my hair, he went about drying it for me as well. I’m curious as to how he got so good at blow-drying. I wasn’t going to ask though. We ordered room service and put on a sappy rom-com.

He says it was for me, but I think he likes the movie just a little too much for that to have been true. I’m more of a horror film kind of girl. Rom-coms have never been my thing. I feel like he knows that and is just torturing me with this nonsense.

A knock at the door gives me an excuse to get up. “Did you order something?” I ask him.

“Yep. I’ll get it. Wait here.” He throws on a pair of sweats before heading to the door. When he returns, he’s holding two black paper bags.

“What’d you get?” I ask.

“It’s a surprise for later. But for now…” He pauses as he puts the bags down next to his side of the bed. Pulling out a deck of cards and a box of chips, he says, “It’s time for that poker game. I really hope you’re prepared to deliver on that bet, Miss McKinley. Because, I assure you, I fully plan to claim my prize.” He smirks.

“I’m prepared, but are you?”

“Sure thing, babe. Whatever you want.” I watch as Ash removes the cards from the deck. He then hands me the box of chips. “We’ll start with one thousand each. Split them,” he tells me.

“Sure thing.” I smile sweetly, all the while wondering how the hell I’m going to win this game. I know I’m good, but it’s really more about luck than skill. Something tells me Ash is going to be able to read each of my tells.

“We’re playing Heads-up. You know the drill?” Ash asks.

“Yep.” I don’t tell him that I’ve been playing this game with my mum since I could recognize numbers.

“Ready? I’ll go first as the dealer. After each hand, we’ll swap.” He starts by placing the small blind.

I put out the big blind. I win the first hand with a straight, beating Ash’s set of pairs. He grumbles something about beginner’s luck.

As it turns out, it was more than just beginner’s luck because after four rounds, I’ve collected all of his chips.

“Maybe I should be taking you downstairs to play. Tell me, why the hell do you cheat with Ben if you can play this well?”

“Because we can.” I shrug, not really having an answer for that question.

“Okay, well, you win, babe. How about we deliver on your little fantasy of having both holes filled at once?”

Is he serious? I begin to panic. What the actual fuck? There is no way he’s planning on sharing me with anyone else, is there? Shit, maybe I should have let him win. As that thought crosses my mind, I wonder just how easily I actually won.
