Chapter 15
I stared at the Golden Girls, mouth agape. âWait a minute, Agnes put a spell on my mother? Why? When?â The only clue I had that they even knew each other at all was a decades-old Polaroid Iâd found in my grandmotherâs things. Why on Earth would Agness put a spell on my mom?
âOh, the when is easy,â Stella said. âFifty years ago, almost exactly.â
I felt a little faint. Four years before I was born. Before my mother even met my father. âHow exactly?â
Harrietâs expression was one of sympathy. âA few days after your mother arrived in town.â
So they knew about my momâs arrival in town. The fact that the time frame coincided with the date the spellâwhatever it was forâwas cast was... interesting. âWhy did Agnes cast a spell? And what for? And whyâd you help her?â
âListen, as interesting as this all is, I need to get ready for my date,â Daphne said, heading toward the hall. âGot some freshening up to do, if you get my drift.â
âNo, Daphne, we do not get your drift,â Maude said. âWhatever do you mean?â
âI think we do get her drift, dear,â Harriet said. She glanced over at Daphne. âTell us more about the lucky fella. Other than heâs hung, literally, like a horse.â
I held back a guffaw. I guess she was still seeing the centaur.
Daphne paused and waved her off. âOh, you donât know him. Heâs new in town. Now, Iâve gotta go, but Iâm sure the girls can help you, Juniper. This was mostly Harrietâs doing anyway. Toodle-oo!â
I slid a glance at Harriet whoâd busied herself putting more cookie dough on baking sheets. âIs that so?â
She sighed. âYes, it is.â
I crossed my arms. âWell?â
She carefully placed her spoons onto a spoon rest and stepped back from the cookie dough. âLet me make some tea, and weâll sit on the porch and talk.â
âYouâre procrastinating,â I accused.
âShe is,â Maude agreed. âIâll make the tea. You two go sit on the porch.â
âIâm coming, too.â Stella rose from her stool, clearly not about to let juicy gossip get by her.
Harriet pushed her back down. âNo, youâre not. I need to talk to JJ, and I canât do it with you making snarky comments.â
âCan I help it if the world is full of stupid people? Thereâs too much fodder.â Stella shrugged and went back to her crossword.
I followed Harriet to the back door and out onto the porch. At night, there wasnât much of a view. At least not to meâI was pretty sure the Golden Girls could see just fineâbut that wasnât important right now. Right now, all I wanted were answers.
Harriet flipped a switch, and strings of fairy lights came on. We sat in plush armchairs at a small patio table, and Harriet leaned back, eyes closed, as if trying to collect her thoughts. She let out a deep sigh. âRight. I guess I should start at the beginning.â
âThat would be good.â Somebody needed to.
âFifty years ago, Agnes came across a young woman whose car had broken down on the highway.
