CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

Amelia checked her reflection one last time before going down to the kitchen. Her dad was nursing his post-supper cup of tea. “You have plans for this evening?”

“Jonah’s coming over so we can fine-tune our invention.”

“You think this is the one?”

“Might be. We’ll let you throw together our logo.”

“Sure, I’ll squeeze you in.”

“You have one client, right? The beer guy?”

Well, there was a punch in the gut. “You forgot Loyalist Arms, Sail & Anchor, Coastal Mechanicals in the city, Ocean Botanicals, Crouse and Sons—”

A look of surprise crossed his face. “I guess college wasn’t a waste of money.”

Son of a bitch.

Amelia drove to town at her usual sedate pace, double and triple checking for traffic, pissing off the dude behind her in the pickup. Cool your jets, bozo.

She snagged a parking spot not too far from the pub. By the amount of noise coming through the open windows, the darts tournament was in full swing. Stu had texted everyone to head to the events room so they wouldn’t be sidetracked by the rowdiness in the pub. Something happened there most nights, either a competitive quiz, or a televised sporting event that required either cheers or groans, or like tonight, a darts tournament. She pulled open the door and gave the private room a quick scan. For the first time in years, she was the last to arrive. She checked her phone. Nope, five minutes early. “Hi, guys. Sounds like a real party next door, eh?”

Stu filled glasses behind the small bar. “Semi-finals night. What can I get you?”

Jan spun on a stool. “Why the fancy duds? You have a date?”

Amelia’s cheeks warmed and all heads turned to check out her fancy duds. “I … no, don’t be silly. I’m meeting a girlfriend later. A tonic water, please.” She raised a hand in greeting to Nate.

Nate winked and the smile on his face was so … so … interested male looking at the woman he desired. Jan’s piqued interest was palpable.

Amelia pulled out a chair at the table. “Shall we get started? Sylvia is busy with the kids. And I’m sure we all have other things to do this evening.”

Nate was flanked by Stu on one side and, no fool her, Chloe on the other. Chloe hadn’t been in any type of relationship since moving to MacLeod’s Cove three years ago that Amelia knew of. She could be good for Nate, intelligent, pretty, owned a house, good job, physically fit, had all her own teeth.

A possessive, green gremlin perched on Amelia’s shoulder. Nate seemed to be enjoying the little conversation he and Chloe had going on, and he smiled an awful lot. Get over yourself. Amelia didn’t have any claim on him, didn’t want any claim on him, they were friends.

And only friends. Keeping a distance was your decision, Princess

Amelia opened the festival binder. “I sorted through the carton you left us, Chloe—”

“I was so sorry to leave you with the mess.” She placed a hand on Nate’s forearm and leaned further into his personal space.
