CHAPTER ELEVEN

I felt like I had been tasered. My hands were shaking and before I could stop them, my eyes filled with tears. In three seconds flat, I went from love and romantic bliss, the high of telling my family snapped away, and I felt a pang through my heart as though she had reached in and squeezed it into mush herself.

"What do you mean, leaving?" I gasped.

Alex, who had been looking down at our hands knotted together, looked up at me.

"On tour! I'm going on a tour! Oh my god, Paige, what did you think I meant?" She was half-laughing, half-shocked at my reaction and brought my hands up to her mouth. She kissed them. "I'm not leaving you."

The relief I felt coursed through my body, and I actually did start half-crying through laughter. Alex tenderly wiped the tears from my cheeks and we continued to chuckle at my reaction.

"So this is what you meant when you said you were dramatic," she said through her snickers.

"You can't fault me for that, all you said was you were leaving." I pouted.

She leaned over and claimed my lips with hers in a way that said she wasn't going anywhere. "I guess I just figured you would know what that means. I'm a touring comedian, so I'm leaving, to go on tour." She was still amused at my reaction.

I kept pouting and vaguely remembered her saying something like that on our first date. Then I realized that she was actually leaving. My lower lip jutted out further.

"Now I'm just sad that you're going. I'm happy for your tour, obviously, but I can't believe how much I'm going to miss you." I snuggled in closer to her. "When do you go?"

"Next week. It's a small Midwest tour with a couple of other queer lady comedians. We're calling it 'We're So Brave' and it's already sold out in a bunch of places. I'll be back at the end of August, in time to see you kill it at the concert. Then I'll be gone for another week or so."

I beamed. "Did you plan that around me?"

"Maybe." She smiled secretly at me and I stroked her bottom lip with my fingertip, touched.

"Why 'We're So Brave'?"

"It's a nod to how many dummies have told us how brave we are to be out and be women and be comedians. So brave of us to live our lives, you know?"

I chuckled. The name was perfectly her, subversive and clever. I trailed my fingers down her arm. "That's amazing. You're amazing. I'm so excited for you. And sad for me."

She looked down at me, a serene smile on her face. "I am also both of those things. I wish you could come with us."

"Me too."

We were interrupted by my buzzer. Our sushi had arrived. Over spicy tuna rolls, she told me all about her tour. She'd be all over the Midwest, including Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin, downstate Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. I was impressed with the scale. I knew she was a rising star, but I didn't know she was going to play such large venues.
