CHAPTER NINE BE YOURSELF

Finally the day of the audition arrived. My mom picked me, Isa, and Tamiko up from school. Allie was already with her in the car. I was thrilled to have my best friends and my sister there to cheer me on. My dad had wanted to come also, but he’d had to stay at the veterinary clinic.

“I love your outfit,” Allie said as I slid in next to her. “It’s very Sierra.”

I beamed. “That’s exactly what I was going for! Isa helped me pick it out.”

The three of us Sprinkle Sundays sisters squished into the middle seat of my mother’s car, while Isa took the front seat. I was so glad that she wanted to come along. I was even more glad when Tamiko said, “I really like your earrings, Isa. Ear cuffs are huge in Japan right now. I saw a lot of people wearing them when I was there last summer.”

Isa nodded and said thank you. I could tell she felt a little awkward around Allie and Tamiko, even though when we were younger, we all played together all the time. But she was trying, and they were trying, and I appreciated it.

The drive to Hamilton was only about twenty minutes, and when we pulled into the parking lot of the community center, it was already packed. A bunch of kids must have left school early in order to show up and get in line. I’d had a geometry test in the afternoon that would have been a pain to miss, but now I wished I’d tried to reschedule it. The butterflies in my stomach were flapping wildly as I looked at how many people were there.

“Stay cool,” Isa said, even though I hadn’t said a word. “It’s just singing. You do it all the time.”

“I’m cool,” I said. Then I looked at my friends and sister. “No, I’m not! I’m terrified!”

Allie side-hugged me. “You’re going to be great. Just… be yourself!”

Everyone laughed, and I was so glad that I’d finally settled on that song. It really did seem perfect for the occasion. I wished I’d decided on it sooner so I could have practiced it more, but I’d been singing it in my head all day at school, and at home in the evenings for my parents and Isa. I was as ready as I could be.

After we parked and walked up to the entrance, my mom went to scout out some information about where we should sign in and where we’d be waiting to audition, while Allie, Tamiko, Isa, and I stood in line.

“There are so many people,” Allie said. “Can you believe it? I had no idea this would be so big.”

I shot her a nervous look. “Don’t say that! You’re making it worse!”

Tamiko shook her head and said dismissively, “Half of these people have probably never sung anything in their lives. They’ve just watched those singing competitions on TV and decided they could do it too.”

“Yeah,” agreed Allie. “You’re a real singer, Sierra.
