A while later, the guys are relaxing and watching television when David returns to the den, this time followed by Bryn Edwards.

Wes jumps to his feet, dropping his ice pack. “Bryn, hey, I didn’t know you were coming by.”

“I called her,” David explains. “She called to check on you and Sean and I asked her to come over.”

“I hope that’s all right,” she says, looking a bit uncomfortable.

“Of course. We’re glad you’re here,” Wes says, smiling.

“So, how are you doing? Your eye looks really bad,” she says, walking over to him to see his eye closer.

“I’ve felt better, that’s for sure,” he replies, looking down at her lovely face.

What is it about this woman? He isn’t sure why but he’s so comfortable with her.

Her face scrunches up. “It looks like it really hurts,” she says, cradling his face in her hands as she examines his eye.

“Uh huh,” he replies, his heart rate speeding up from her touch and proximity.

Josh stares at him a moment then grins at David and Rod.

“Let’s sit down,” Josh says as he sits.

Everyone else follows suit.

Wes squeezes the ice pack in his hand and smiles awkwardly at Bryn.

“Shouldn’t that be on your eye instead of in your hand?” she asks with a grin.

Laughter erupts in the den. “He hasn’t caught on to that yet,” Josh says, “we have to keep reminding him.”

“Seriously, Wes, it starts swelling as soon as you take it off. Leave it on there,” David says.

“I know it does. It’s a pain in the ass to hold it on,” Wes grumbles as he lays his head back on the top of the sofa and sets the pack on his eye.

He sighs in irritation. He can’t see anyone when he’s lying like this. Bryn is here now and dammit, he wants to see her.

“How is Sean?” Bryn asks.

“That’s one of the reasons I asked you to come over. We’ve made some decisions we want to talk to you about,” David says.

“Okay,” she responds, getting comfortable on the sofa. Wes turns to look at her to find her legs pulled up under her body as she focuses on David.

She glances at him as he looks at her but turns back to David.

“After talking with Sean’s sister, she’s coming to get him out of jail tomorrow. She and her husband are going to make him go to rehab. If he refuses, they’ll apply to have him sent against his will. In that case, Wes and Rod will have to write up statements.”

“Yeah, turns out he’s used Rod as a punching bag for quite a while,” Josh adds.

Bryn stiffens. “What do you mean?”

Wes sits up again as Rod lifts his shirt. Gasping, Bryn mumbles, “Oh my gosh.”

“We’ve decided we need to move on from him,” David continues.

“I can understand why. Do you have a plan?” she asks.

“Rod has a friend whose band has just broken up. They’ve played together before. He’s going to call him to see if he’s interested.”

“That’s great,” she says.

“If he’s interested, it will be,” Wes says.
