R EADING THE T RUTH

Another way we grow in the fear of the Lord is through regular reading of the Bible. Notice what each future king of Israel was commanded to do in Deuteronomy 17:18–19:

When he takes the throne of his kingdom, he is to write for himself on a scroll a copy of this law. … It is to be with him, and he is to read it all the days of his life so that he may learn to revere the LORD his God and follow carefully all the words of this law and these decrees.

The king was to be a regular reader of God’s law, specifically for the purpose of learning to fear the Lord and obey Him. What was true for Israel’s kings should be true of us today. Regular, prayerful, personal exposure to Scripture is the most effective means of growing in the fear of God.

Whatever Bible-reading plan you use (and many are available today), I strongly urge you to include a regular reading through the Old Testament. Here we see God’s holiness and sovereignty portrayed most vividly. Consider such a matter-of-fact report as this one:

That night the angel of the L ORD went out and put to death a hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the Assyrian camp. When the people got up the next morning—there were all the dead bodies! (2 Kings 19:35)
