Julie, Carrianne, Gwyneth, Jeanette, and Cathy did not try to control long working hours, distance, marital status, family demands, or insecure teenagers. They all very cleverly found a way to let go and then do everything in their power by paying intention.
Paying intention, a creatively proactive approach to giving someone your undivided presence and love, multiplies your power again and again. What one microaction could you take to be more intentional?
Give Yourself Credit
It’s easier to power up if we acknowledge our efforts and give ourselves credit for a job well done. One woman told me about the guilt she felt as a young, single mom of three little ones. Despite working long and hard, her budget rarely stretched far enough to meet even the most basic needs like breakfast cereal or birthday presents. To compensate, she gave her children a box of cereal wrapped in old newspapers each year for their birthday. She said her heart sank at the thought of this crude annual gift. But surprisingly, even as her financial picture improved, her kids reminded her as their birthdays grew near: “Don’t forget to wrap up my box of cereal.” She had no idea of its significance until she attended her three-year-old granddaughter’s birthday party. Among the gifts was a box of cereal wrapped in old newspapers. Her daughter beamed, “It always meant love to us, Mom. I want to pass it on.”
The best attention is not necessarily expensive or elaborate. Let it simply pour from your heart, and then give yourself credit for all the little things that say, “I noticed you.”
