Madison Square

The Flatiron provides an appropriately impressive introduction to Madison Square, perhaps the loveliest of New York’s big squares. Madison Square was laid out as we see it today in 1870, at a time when it was at the center of New York society. Like Union Square it began life as a potter’s field, or public burial ground, was later used as a parade ground, and takes its name from a timber roadhouse that stood where Fifth Avenue now meets 23rd Street, the last stop for stagecoaches heading north out of the city in the mid-19th century. The roadhouse was called Madison Cottage after the former president James Madison.
