GEMMA
Fury burned in Gemmaâs belly as she threw open the door and stalked down the hall as fast as possible. Because if she had to spend one more second with anger-management-issues-Todd and backstabbing-Ally both acting like their lives were serious while Gemmaâs was trivial, well, she was going to really lose it. The worst part was that she had been starting to like both of them. Todd had seemed like a straight shooter and a lot smarter than sheâd have guessed while AllyâAlly had seemed like someone Gemma would want to be friends with. Not that this meant Gemma was usually a bad judge of people. Obviously. She had good friends and Miles had chosen her because she was such a good friend. Wasnât there some kind of brainwashing that took place when someone was kidnapped, making the victim start to like their kidnapper? It was probably the same when you were trapped working with people to avoid blackmail.
The hallway was filling up and Gemma slowed down a little, trying to look normal.
âHey, Gem,â Amirah said, coming up with Mei and Bianca. âSit with us at lunch? There was some major drama with Vivi in our bread-baking group this morning.â
All three of them started laughing and Gemma was overcome with envy. She would have loved being in an Explorerâs group with her friends this morning, seeing a juicy drama play out. But of course that would only have happened if Gemmaâd had a normal morning with an Explorerâs Day class instead of a crime-filled, blackmailed morning with three people she now loathed.
âI canât but definitely tell me everything later,â Gemma said, hoping she didnât sound as jealous as she felt.
She dodged a couple of sixth-grade boys who were running and throwing balls of tape at each other and turned the corner. She was now going in the opposite direction of the middle school cafeteria, so there were only a few people, all walking in the opposite direction. The high school also had lunch, in their own cafeteria upstairs, and when possible, Miles snuck down to meet Gemma near the far stairs by the nurseâs office, which was closed during lunch. (This had never made sense to Gemmaâwhat if someone choked or threw up during lunch?)
Usually when he missed her at snack, he made it during lunch. But she never knew when he was coming, or if he was coming, because it was hard for him to text. Which totally made senseâhe was in high school and very busy. Except, did it make sense? Was he that busy?
Gemma shook her head, irritated with herself. Sheâd never questioned Miles before and she wasnât going to start now. Ally, Owen, and Todd had poisoned her with their comments, but they had no idea what they were talking about. And obviously high school was busier than middle schoolâMiles was thinking about colleges already!
Gemma reached the stairs and ducked into the stairwellâone thing she had learned today was that she and Miles had to be more careful, because if Ally had seen them, someone else could too.
