Girls can empower themselves by learning effective self-defense techniques. Classes in self-defense are offered by rape crisis centers, YWCAs, and community recreation agencies.

A volunteer usually answers the phone at an RCC, as the centers do not have budgets for a lot of paid positions. The volunteer is trained to offer calm advice about the various options available to a rape victim and how to access the center’s resources. The volunteer is often a survivor as well. If you call an RCC, you do not have to give any identifying information to get your questions answered. You may want to take advantage of the services offered. For instance, you may want a legal or medical advocate to accompany you to the police station or hospital. The advocates may provide you with the pros and cons of making a police report or deciding to prosecute. They probably will not influence you one way or another. These are your decisions to make.

Rape crisis centers throughout the United States and Canada receive hundreds of thousands of calls each day. Yet not many rape victims take advantage of the services offered. The 2007 Rape in Utah Survey shows that only 3 percent of rape victims contacted a rape crisis line. Teens are especially concerned that no one find out about the rape. Even though they realize the rape was not their fault, they worry that others will judge them or hold them responsible.
