JENKINS TOLD KOSTOPLIS he was being transferred.

“He said he was on the lieutenant’s list and that, you know, he had a lot of complaints. He wanted to get rid of the complaints,” Kostoplis recalled. “They weren’t going to be going on the street. And he knows I like being on the street.”

Then Hersl got transferred. He landed in Citywide Shooting, out of enforcement and off the street altogether now. After almost two decades of busting heads, Hersl was riding a desk and wearing a suit every day, going out to investigate shootings. It was the end of a very long run. He told his family he was happy to be away from the GTTF squad he had been working with.

When Hersl stopped by the State’s Attorney’s Office one day shortly after the transfer, his friend Anna Mantegna was shocked by the transformation. Hersl usually wore sweats and T-shirts and sneakers—and when he wasn’t out running around, flip-flops—and here he was in a navy-blue suit.

Something about him seemed so sad to Mantegna. She showed him a wall where she had hung pictures of known members of an East side gang she was looking at for a case. Hersl knew the backstory of every one of them and corrected a few mistakes Mantegna had made—one of the guys she had hanging up was actually a member of a rival crew.

He’d looked alive, she noticed, when he was talking about the East side.
