“IT’S SO HOT OUT HERE that even the swimming pool feels like a sauna,” Brynlee complains, getting out of the pool and grabbing a towel to dry off.

“Where are you going?” I call after her, propping my chin on my crossed arms as I watch her from the pool’s ledge.

“Into the air conditioning where sane people are,” she calls back.

“Only the old and boring people are in there!” I shout, but my cries fall on deaf ears as my sister closes the door behind her.

I roll my eyes, push away from the pool’s ledge, and swim a few laps again until my arms grow weary. She’s right. It is too hot to be out here, but all the fun people are gone. There are no other teenagers or young adults around. Even my brother, Brayden, caught a ride back into town with friends.

My dad’s party was fun while other kids were here our age, but now it’s just my parents, my sister, and me. I climb out of the pool, touching my thick, poofy hair as I look around for a towel.

“It’s beautiful,” I hear behind me.

Turning around, I adjust my bikini and smile shyly at Jim. “Thanks,” I say, finally spotting my towel a few feet from where he stands.

I hesitantly walk in his direction, taking in his relaxed stance with his hands shoved into his pockets.

“Are you enjoying yourself?”

“Yeah,” I reply softly, drying my face and hair. “Brynlee went back inside. Claims it’s too hot out here.”

He chuckles softly. “She’s right, you know,” he says, running his fingers through his dark hair. It’s grown a little longer than he normally wears it, curling over the collar of his shirt with a lock hanging in his eyes.

“So, why are you out here then?” I charge sassily, eyeballing him a little more openly. My eyes take in the flash in his light blue eyes, broad shoulders, muscled arms with a fine sheen of dark hair along the forearms, and powerful toned legs just as hairy as his arms.

He pulls his fingers down his squared-off jaw, and I wonder what the hair on his jaw and chin feel like. I bet they’re prickly and coarse.

“Came to check on you. Brynlee said she was going to bed and that you’re crazy.”

Laughing, I shake my head. “Not crazy. Just bored.”

“Sorry about that.”

I plop down on a chaise lounge and cross my legs. Shrugging, I say, “It’s okay. Where are my parents?”

“Went to bed about an hour ago. Your dad was—”

“Drunk. I saw he’d had one too many drinks. It’s a wonder he made it up the stairs,” I reply, snickering.

I love my father, and he’s a good man, but he isn’t good at holding his liquor. He’s a lightweight, and he seldom drinks.

“He didn’t.”

“You guys left him asleep downstairs?”

“No. Your mom and I helped him up the steps to the guest bedroom where they’re staying.”

I turn onto my side to face him, where he’s perched beside me on the side of the chaise lounge.
