Forty more long, hungry days passed. By now, snow reached the cabin roof and covered the tops of the pines. It was impossible to get dry wood for the fire. Zeke and Virginia chipped away at the log walls. Day and night they huddled together, cold and starving. Two-year-old Tommy lay on his stomach, chewing the rawhide rug.

Face thin and strained, Mrs. Reed pulled one of the rawhides off the roof. They removed the hair, scrubbed it, cut it into strips, and boiled it.

“It tastes disgusting!” Patty shuddered.

“Not that bad. Eat it!” Zeke gulped down the gluey soup. He knew some of the other teamsters were literally starving.

As hide after hide was used for soup, snow began to trickle into the cabin.

“We have to stop stripping the roof,” Mrs. Reed said.

Virginia looked pointedly at Zeke’s leather riding boots, protruding from his canvas sack of belongings.
