QUINN CAUGHT OLIVIA when she fainted. He lifted her in his arms as the door swung open with a screech of rusted hinges. “What the hell, Yancy? No one said anything about this.”

Yancy shook his head. “I don’t know, son. Let’s get inside while we can.” He caught Quinn by the upper arm and urged him through the doorway.

“I’ll stand guard here,” Kayne stood just inside the door. “We don’t want any surprises.”

“Dair and I better put the horses somewhere out of sight.” Van and the younger man headed for the animals.

Quinn carried Olivia into what remained of the great hall. The only light came from the sunlight streaming through the broken panes of sea-facing windows. There were two staircases, one on each side of the room. Beneath each of them were doors—one closed and one hanging precariously by its top hinge. Tables and chairs were scattered around the room, most of them broken, and all covered in inches of dust and dirt. Dust motes danced in the beams of afternoon sunlight on their way to join their already fallen kindred.

As Quinn stepped further into the room, Olivia’s eyelids fluttered. A moment later, her green eyes opened, and she looked up at him. “Did it work?” She looked around dazedly. “Did the door open?”

“Yeah, love, you did it.” Quinn clasped her, not ready to set her on her feet yet. “Can you tell us what happened? Why did you faint?”

“I don’t know why. I remember there was a lot of power there.” She pushed against his chest. “I’m fine now. You can put me down.”

Quinn didn’t want to let her go. What he wanted was to call Pritch and demand that the Sidhe return them to Cosaint. However, he lowered her feet to the floor, keeping one arm around her waist until he was certain she could hold herself up. Only then did he reluctantly released her.

Olivia looked around curiously. She had never seen an actual castle before, but even she knew this was a small one. Still, at one time, it must have looked grand. The few tables still standing had beautiful carvings along the edges. Tattered remnants of velvet in an undeterminable color still clung to some of the chairs.

“How do you feel, Olivia?” Yancy walked over to her side.

“I’m fine, Yancy.”

“Fainting is not fine,” Quinn argued.

Turning from looking over the room, Olivia frowned at him. “Well, I’m fine now.” She turned her back on him to face Yancy. “Where is the room with the book? Do we know?”

Yancy looked at the nearest staircase. “Somewhere upstairs. Wherever it is, I want us to find it before dark. I don’t want to have to use a light that might be seen from the sea.”

“I’m ready. Let’s go.” Olivia headed for the stairs with the hanging door.

“Whoa.” Quinn grabbed her by the arm, pulling her to a stop. “One of us goes first. I’ve got the sword, remember?”

She was irritated at him. “Oh, I remember,” she replied provocatively, slowly looking him over from feet to head.
