I won’t lie and say I knew I was an avatar the moment I saw myself, but it didn’t take me long to figure it out. The reflection staring back had some resemblances, a small face, tiny elven-looking points on the tops of the ears, and my eyes were the same shade of aqua-blue. Other than that, most of what used to be Panama was altered in some way. My straight brown hair was platinum blonde and wavy, both my breasts and ass seemed to have gained at least two sizes, and my skin was flawless.

After watching myself undress and redress, the initial shock wore off and I became hysterical. I’ve never been hysterical before (which by the way, in Latin terms means suffering from the womb; I burst out laughing in biology when I learned that.), but there’s always a first time for everything. I think I blacked out but I’m not sure. All I know is that one minute I was getting dressed and the next, I was out shopping for shoes.

During my first few weeks as an Avatar, there was a lot of whining and crying involved. I can’t say I’m proud of how I handled it but hell, give me a break. Finding out you died and were stuck spending the rest of eternity as someone’s video game piece sucked ass. On the positive side, at least I was able to think. Avatars are supposed to be dead, as in not retaining (that’s a good word, too) any emotions, feelings, or thoughts. I, on the other hand, retained (had to use it again) all three of those things.

The avatar name given to me is Sila (sounds like sigh-la) and my handler’s real name is Gina. I only know this because sometimes she forgets and gives people the wrong name. I don’t hate Gina, I mean, it’s not her fault I died, but that doesn’t mean I have to like her. First of all, she’s obviously rich. How do I know? It’s simple. With how much money the gaming industry gives the families, pays for the reconstruction, and pays for the memorial, only the super, super rich kids get avatars. In my entire life, I have only met two people with avatars and I guarantee they have plots reserved for them on the moon. Secondly, avatars aren’t just game pieces. You have to take care of them. You have to purchase them a furnished bungalow, feed them, buy them clothes, accessories, and any other need they might have.

And when I say must, I mean it. There are very strict laws and rules when owning an avatar. Their systems, digestive, heart, etc., are run by sensors and electric pulses which monitor them. These systems are also monitored by the gaming industry. Eventually, most people tire of avatars and they are sold as refurbished product, which is why the rules are so strict. Not feeding or taking care of your avatar brings a heavy fine.

Repeated mistakes can land you in jail.
