No doubt you can tell by now that the chapters in this book are not stand-alones. They intersect at point after point.

There is so much more we could say about what it means to be a disciple. This chapter can only skim the surface.

We have examined some basic traits or characteristics of disciples—including love, forgiveness, Bible study, giving, prayer, and evangelism. The list can seem so lengthy at times that it begins to look like, well, a list. We may start to think that if we do this one and that one—if we check off all the items—then we have done our duty as Christians. In fact, we can become legalistic about it—especially toward others.

In the first century, Jesus pointed out a group of people who were list keepers and proud of it. They were called Pharisees. The Pharisees were proud because they were scrupulous keepers of the religious laws. They wore masks of righteousness to hide the hardness of heart and wickedness inside them.

Jesus had no patience for their hypocrisy. He went straight to the heart of the matter:

What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs—beautiful on the outside but filled on the inside with dead people’s bones and all sorts of impurity. Outwardly you look like righteous people, but inwardly your hearts are filled with hypocrisy and lawlessness.
