Systemic sexual exploitation in neoliberal cities

Sexualized city precincts and the dominance of hypersexualized images of women need to be contextualized in the broader systems that profit from women’s sexual exploitation. In the Melbourne metropolitan area there are ninety-nine legal brothels and an unknown number of illegal brothels (Figure 4.2 ). The concentration of many of the legal brothels in certain areas of the central business district and inner city convey that the sex industry is not pushed to marginal social and economic zones. Similarly, the large metropolitan distribution is concentrated around areas of business and industry but less prevalent where residential areas are dominant. This supports my argument that hypersexuality flourishes and is supported in spaces of commerce and retail.
