Hallie looked uncomfortable.

But I took the brush. “Fine.”

As I made tons of tiny green lines, I wondered what Pearl had been doing back by the plants. Hallie was doing pH checks this week. So it wasn’t Pearl’s turn.

But for now, I kept my mouth closed and kept painting the grass.

CHAPTER 6 CIRCUIT BOARDS AND SOCCER BALLS

“Can you pass the hammer?” Stella asked, holding a nail against the wall.

Dad grabbed it before I could. “Here you go.”

Mom sat next to me on my new bedspread. She flipped pages in an old calendar. She pointed to a picture of hundreds of galaxies. They looked like tiny disks of glitter. “Ooh… what about this one, Astrid?”

Our walls were done—they were a perfect, space-y blue. I’d added a few stars on my side. We’d moved the beds and stuff in yesterday. Now Mom and Dad were helping us decorate.

“I love it!” I told Mom. “What are you hanging, Stella?”

“Circuit boards!” she said, holding a second nail in her mouth. Thunk, thunk, went the hammer.

“I still don’t think those are art,” I said. I held up the next page in the calendar for her. “Are you sure you don’t want the Milky Way?”

“Art is a matter of opinion, Astrogirl.” Dad winked at me.

I rolled my eyes. Mom and I kept sorting through the photos. We tore out a couple of my favorites. Mom said she’d put them in some frames we’d gotten at a thrift store.
