I wasn’t only surprised, but happy that Claire had asked me to be her guide on the trip. I hoped it meant she trusted me, but the only indication was that she’d asked. I couldn’t be sure, only by the feeling in my gut and certain looks she gave me, but I was almost sure she was still holding a grudge for my part in her being stuck here, and now her uncle, as well. It was unfortunate, but there was nothing I could do about it.

Sunshine plodded along the trail with the other horses, being more amenable than usual, which was a great change of pace,

I felt bad about her being stuck but that was compounded by being glad she was stuck here on this side with me. I had a lot of mixed feelings when it came to Claire. I had a hard time remembering my life before she was in it.

For his part, Silas loved “a good adventure,” and he’d taken to looking at this as the biggest one he’d ever been on.

Better than Boston, he’d told me just after he’d also told me not to blame myself. I was doing a job I was paid to do by bringing Claire here, and he’d pointed a gun at me to make me bring him here so he could see her. Can’t fault a man for making a living or trying to save his own life.

Peggy nickered and shook his head, probably because there were still miles of trail left before we would get to Amberhill. He wasn’t a rider horse that was used to this kind of workout. Plus, he probably wanted to spread his wings and fly, but we couldn’t take that kind of chance while we were on our way to a town hidden from the Fae King. Claire leaned forward and rubbed his neck and he smiled.

The flying horse smiled. I must have imagined it.

I glanced at Claire. She looked at me and didn’t glare so I guessed we were making progress. She even smiled with a pretty blush creeping up her cheeks. It was the same smile she’d given me when we were on the trail before I brought her across The Rift. It made me feel like a heel.

“It’s dark tonight. Darker than usual, it seems like. Even with the moonlight.” Her voice was soft, silky, like fabric brushing over my skin. She held Peggy’s reins lightly, giving him the lead. He started prancing, kicking his knees up high and bouncing Claire.

I nodded. It wasn’t
