Nick and Harry spend the next couple of hours researching the location for the break-in and making calls to set things up. It feels good—it feels so, so, so good to finally be doing something concrete towards getting Penelope back.

After a time, they reach the limit of what can be achieved remotely—they need to look at the building themselves.

“I could come with you,” Crystal suggests shyly. “I’m not very good at magic, but the one spell I can do well is the one to see if there's any magic at work. I can help pick out if there are any magical wards to protect the place.”

“We should all go,” I decide.

Harry shakes his head. “No. If the idea is to keep you from being associated with the break-in, you can't be anywhere near the place, not until the night we do it. On top of which, your face will be known to them, so if someone sees you, the whole thing will be ruined. It's already risky enough for Nick and I to go, given that the Hair has met us before. Actually, if need be, that's where Crystal could come in. The Hair doesn't know her, so she can be out in the open without too much risk. But you, Pree, you need to stay away.”

Much as it pains me, he's right. The problem is that I don't want to stay home twiddling my thumbs and waiting for the Hair to contact me. But I don't have much in the way of other options.

Ben also decides to join the reconnaissance trip, suggesting he can help with any protection if needed. Harry and Nick both look at him doubtfully but don’t argue. To be fair, despite his puny appearance, Ben is probably stronger than both of them, when my anti-magic isn’t affecting him.

They all head off, leaving me alone with Mary. And it becomes almost immediately obvious that despite saying she’s talking to me again, she’s obviously still annoyed at me for teasing her about Love Island, because she disappears the moment the others leave.

I'm groping around in my mind trying to think of something I can do, something useful, but I'm coming up with a blank. Don't get me wrong, I'm super grateful that my brothers have come along to help save the day—more grateful than I can say. But I hate feeling this helpless.

I go stand in the living room doorway. “Do you want to watch TV?” I call at the empty room. “Mary? I could put the TV on for you, if you want. Put on Love Island.”

Silence.

“I'm sorry for teasing you about it before. I'm obviously in a bad mood at the moment, and I shouldn't have.”

Mary appears on the other side of the sofa. “Yes, it was extremely rude and unkind of you.”

I nod. “Did I hurt your feelings?”

“Of course not,” she scoffs in a way that makes me think that I might have. “I just don’t like rudeness.”

“Well, whatever it is, I’m sorry.”

“Thank you.” She looks surprised.
