Now if Kane had known that the minute he turned his back the dark bastard was going to just disappear again, he might not have been so amicable about it.
He wasn't sure what he could have done, but shit.
And not only were Vax and Duke gone, but the little bitch was gone, too.
Now granted, the boy was gone, and Kendall assured him that Brad was safe, and that was a good thing.
But Kane still wanted some justice for what Duke had suffered.
"I think Analise suffers every time she looks at Duke."
Kane glared at Kendall over his mug of coffee. "Stay out of my head."
Kendall snorted. "I can't read your mind." With a shrug of her shoulders, she said, "I'm not sure why that is. Most humans have minds that are like an open book."
Her nose wrinkled as she added, "But yours is like a tome of ancient Greek. Not only can't I read it, I can't understand half of anything you do."
She lifted a steaming mug of tea and sipped a little before lowering it back to the table. "No, I wasn't reading your mind, darling. I was just reading your face."
Kane blew out a pent-up breath of air. "Where did he take them?"
Kendall raised one shoulder, a pensive look on her face. "Some place safe. Maybe to his ranch. Maybe to the school. Maybe to England. I'm not really positive. But someplace where Cat can't get to them."
Arching a brow at her, Kane asked skeptically, "Would she even try?"
"Oh, yes."
They fell into silence as the waitress approached, carrying a tray laden with food. She transferred the dishes from her tray, ignoring Kendall, but bending low over the table and treating Kane to an excellent view of her rather bountiful breasts.
"If there's anything I can do for you now, sweetie, let me know," she cooed, before she walked away, swinging her hips.
Kendall waited until the woman was out of earshot before she said, "Well, she's a friendly one, isn't she, sweetie?"
Kane grinned at her. "A ray of sunshine." He scooped up a forkful of eggs and popped them into his mouth.
"You look exhausted," he said softly.
She glanced up at him. "I feel exhausted."
"Well, it was a lot easier than I expected, but I'm worn-out just from the stress of it." He started cutting through the country ham, stabbing a piece of it with his fork.
She laughed, but it was a humorless sound. "Kane, it's not over. That was the easy part. But it's not over."
Kane stopped chewing the ham and stared at her. "It's not."
"It is for you. You helped me find Duke, and you can go back to whatever it is you want to do. But I can't stop until I find Cat."
Slumping back against his seat, Kane muttered, "Fuck."
Yeah, that part hadn't occurred to him.
But it should have.
Kane sat there for a few minutes, working on cleaning his plate, brooding and thinking. It took less than five minutes to come to a conclusion. No. It wasn't over. And he knew what he needed to do.
