Chapter Twenty-Three

MAGIC SIZZLED IN THE air as groups of druids came towards us. They walked across the snares they’d laid for us without setting them off. My shield held and I used their energy to power it without them even knowing it. I sent blast after blast of dispelling incantations outwards, breaking their protection so Jake and Mirra could shoot them. Rudy continued to use his own brand of magic to annoy and harass our foes. The druids banished his illusions, so he switched to impeding them by conjuring up sticky puddles of what looked like glue. “Let’s see you magic your way out of that, boyos,” he said with a cackle of glee.

I felt no guilt at gunning down the helplessly mired men. They were doing their best to kill us and they wouldn’t have shown any mercy if our positions had been reversed. Mirra refrained from using her power, probably afraid it would be deflected back at us, or reflected onto the humans who were racing around in panic.

Hearing a snarl of pain that my bond told me came from Connor, I knew I couldn’t afford to lose concentration. He’d run into a trap that he hadn’t seen, but our link told me he was okay. Whatever it had been had hurt him, but he healed too rapidly for it to keep him down for long.

A strange glow began to emanate from my eyes again. It was a reflection of my rage that my mate and friends were being hurt. The ghosts had been captured and I could sense them somewhere close by. My gaze went to the town hall where I knew the Dark was waiting. Harrow was probably lurking inside its walls as well. We would have to fight our way through his lackeys to get to him. When we did, I was going to unleash my fury on the butler. If anyone had it coming, it was him.

Reloading rapidly whenever we ran out of bullets, we were so thickly surrounded by druids that Jake couldn’t see their traps any more. Just to be safe, I sent out a much larger blast of dispelling power. It rocked the sorcerers back, disintegrating their shields and leaving them reeling.

“Stay behind me,” Mirra warned us. Turning her power up to full, she moved in front of us and began to sing. Changing subtly, she became even more beautiful than usual. Wind that only she could feel stirred her hair. Her voice was melodious and insidiously coaxing. Using her native language, she brought the druids beneath her spell. Siren power was enough to bamboozle almost anyone. “Protect us,” she commanded. As one, her new slaves turned to the druids who hadn’t been close enough to be affected and began to attack.

“Very nicely done, sweetheart,” Jake said in admiration. “You’re as talented as you are beautiful.”

Preening beneath his praise, Mirra turned her power down, but didn’t switch it off completely. If she did, her control over her minions would be broken. “We should have enough druids to guard our backs now,” she said.
