Chapter Nineteen

I chuffed and Amber came out of hiding at a trot instead of a dead run. She approached the flag, glanced at the note and the look in her golden eyes told me that she was contemplating marking territory around the note in a very graphic way. I confess that I had a momentary urge to lift my leg on the thing too but common sense kicked in and took over from the Dog’s instinct. I placed my nose against the cloth and inhaled deeply, several times, carving Chastel’s scent into my memory for later.

Amber watched and, when I had done, followed my example.

We made our circuitous way back to the cabin and, after I had dropped the wards and we had done a thorough inspection of the area around the cabin, went back indoors. I re-activated the wards to prevent any nighttime surprises, pulled the door carefully to with my jaws and Amber and I made our way up the stairs to the sleeping loft. Not even bothering to change back to our human forms, we curled up on our respective beds and dropped into dreamless sleep, exhausted from the night’s efforts.
