CHAPTER 16

Hadrian paced the length of the room like a caged animal. He had been doing it almost from the moment he had woken up, and it was beginning to grate on Calum’s nerves. They had been arguing for almost as long, trying to decide their next move, while Korin was away attending to business with the City Guard concerning the mess the monk had left behind in the courtyard yesterday.

Admittedly, most of Calum’s irritation stemmed from how quickly everything seemed to be spiraling out of his control and not with his companion’s antics. Why were all these First-Souls suddenly coming out of the woodwork when he had lived thousands of years without knowing if any others actually existed? Had meeting Hadrian somehow been the catalyst? It was an idea that didn’t sit well. It suggested that the gods really were forcing them to play a game—a game where only they knew the rules, as well as the ultimate goal.

The only thing they had managed to agree on was that they had to find their initial target again. At least this time, Calum knew it was a little boy—and hopefully stayed that way—and knew what the kid looked like. Where to start looking was a different story. With so many Shi out for their guts, Calum no longer felt they could risk moving from city to city as haphazardly as before.

Hadrian blew out a frustrated breath. “Let’s just touch souls again, like we did back in Nisei,” he said, going over to where Calum still sat on his cot and plopping down beside him. “We might get a better result this time since we both know who we are looking for, and you, at least, know what the kid looks like.”

Calum frowned. “I’m not sure I like the idea of doing something like that here where anyone could walk in on us. The door doesn’t lock. I checked.”

“Then we’ll just wait for Korin to return and have him stand guard.”

He raked his hands agitatedly through his hair. “I don’t really like that idea, either.”

“You allowed Korin to see you heal,” Hadrian pointed out. “I don’t see how this is any different.”

“I had no choice then. It would not have mattered if he had betrayed us at that point. We were dying, anyway. This soul-touching business puts me on edge more than my healing ever could. We still don’t even understand why we can do it in the first place. Until we know more about the monk, I would rather he not know that we can do this.”

“This wouldn’t have anything to do with that comment I made earlier about you giving me my soul back, does it?” Hadrian asked suspiciously.

Calum swallowed nervously. He really didn’t want to discuss it right now, at least until he’d had some time to think things through without the air of danger so thick around them. He had hoped that Hadrian had forgotten all about that awkward exchange.

When he remained silent, Hadrian huffed and grasped his shoulder.
